FOC Alert: WYND: THE THRONE IN THE SKY #1
Hey Friends!
Since I’m off enjoying my Substack Summer Schedule and can’t do this in a standard Tiny Update, I just wanted to take a quick moment to bang the drum about a new #1 I’m writing that’s going to be coming out in stores this August. Today is FOC, or “Final Order Cut-Off.” It’s the last day retailers can order a copy and make sure they have enough in hand for release day. It’s also the last day that customers can call their local comic shops and let them know to reserve a copy.
WYND: THE THRONE IN THE SKY #1 is the start of Book Three of the larger Wynd Saga. It’s written by me, James Tynion IV, drawn by the incredible Michael Dialynas, and lettered by AndWorld Design.
Wynd is a YA Fantasy Epic for fans of series like Avatar: The Last Airbender or Bone. It’s set in a world where magic is infectious. If an ordinary human walks out into the forest and makes contact with a magical being, the magic will infect their blood and twist their body making them look different. In the land of Esseriel, The Human Kingdom has walled its capital city Pipetown off from its magic-blooded neighbors - The militaristic Vampyres who live in the Western Deserts, and the Insectoid Faeries who live in the Eastern Forests. Humans fear the strange, magical “weirdbloods”- magic-tainted humans - most of all, and the King has instituted blood laws that prohibit any being with magic blood to live in the city.
At the start of our first book, Wynd was a teenage boy with a secret. His pointed ears were a telltale sign that he was a weirdblood. He was raised in secret by his adopted mother, Miss Molly, and his adopted sister Oakley. All he ever wanted was to be normal, but when he was swept up into a plot to get the Prince of Pipetown out of the Human Kingdom, his ordinary life is ripped apart, and he is forced to run for his life. Over the course of his journey, he learns that he must embrace the magic in himself, and allow it to change him, in order to find peace with himself and to survive.
The first two books are available in paperback right now from Boom! Studios
The first two books feel like they’ve been growing in popularity with each passing month. We’ve been nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for two years running, and this year, the series is up for Best Publication For Teens (Age 13-17). And with each volume released in a new language, the Wynd fanbase is growing.
But we’re here to talk about the latest chapter in this ongoing Fantasy Epic. Similar to the last two books, we’re serializing this book as five oversized comic book issues, each at least 40 pages long. We wanted to guarantee you get a good bite of story in every issue. The issue will give a full recap of the last two books to bring new readers up to speed, and remind familiar readers where we are in Wynd’s journey. This chapter will introduce terrifying new villains and equally terrifying new friends for our
For those of you who weren’t around when I first announced the series, WYND is a story that I started cooking up when I was in high school. It’s literally been bouncing around in my head for half of my life. I could not be happier bringing it to life with my longest-running creative partner, Michael Dialynas, and getting it into all your hands.
We’ve got some truly INCREDIBLE covers for the first issue here. I’m still over the moon I was able to reach out to my friend from back in Gotham City, the legendary Greg Capullo, to bring Wynd to life. If you want to snag some of these bad boys, particularly the open-to-order variants, please reach out to your LCS and let them know to reserve you a copy!

I’m packing my bags for San Diego right now, with my flight first thing tomorrow morning. I know I’m not going to be doing a lot of fan-facing events at the show, but I hope to see some of you at the SIKTC panel on Friday, and please cross your fingers for me during the Eisner Award Ceremony that evening!
Lots to do before then! I hope you’re all having a wonderful July! Go get some sun. Eat a hot dog. Get in the water. It’s summer! Enjoy it!
