New Series: Everything Dead & Dying
The Last of Us meets Yellowstone. Out in September!
Hola Lil’ Onions!
Can you feel it? Halloween is on the horizon! If you squint, you can just make out the fresh light of the jack-o’-lanterns. We are excited to celebrate all things scary and thrilling. We’ll have a lot of fun announcements leading up to Halloween. Since spooky season is almost upon us, I want to tell you a bit about a new miniseries we have coming out in September from Image Comics, created by Tate Brombal and Jacob Phillips, called Everything Dead & Dying. It’s The Last of Us meets Yellowstone, a modern zombie western that will leave you gutted.
Everything Dead & Dying is a haunting five-issue miniseries by Eisner Award-nominated creators Tate Brombal (Barbalien, Batgirl) and Jacob Phillips (That Texas Blood, Newburn) with Pip Martin and Artist In Residence Aditya Bidikar. It’s our latest collaboration with Image Comics, and it’s FOCing this weekend.
We’ve worked with Brombal for years over at Dark Horse with The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos, loving every minute of our time together. But this series is something new, something more mature, yet just as emotionally devastating. As Tate said on our Image retailer call yesterday: “It's a zombie story told through a Western lens, where invaders enter a rural town and a lone man is going to defend his loved ones from them... It just so happens that his loved ones are zombies. I promise you've never read a zombie story like this.”
From Image Comics:
Jack Chandler is the sole survivor of the zombie apocalypse in his rural farming community, but rather than eliminate them, he has chosen to continue living alongside the undead—including the husband and adopted daughter he fought so hard to have. But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of those who hope to kill his family for good.
Eisner Award-nominated creators TATE BROMBAL (Barbalien, Batgirl) and JACOB PHILLIPS (THAT TEXAS BLOOD, NEWBURN) team up for a haunting rural character piece set during a zombie outbreak, best described as THE WALKING DEAD meets Essex County.
Everything Dead & Dying has been getting some killer early press:
Dread Central hosted an exclusive excerpt with a full breakdown of a few pages, from script to lettering. Below, you can take a look at a mini breakdown of how two panels go from script to print.
EXCLUSIVE: ‘Everything Dead & Dying’ Exercept Teases A Harrowing Zombie Story - Mary Beth McAndrews for Dread Central
One of my favorite quotes comes from an article in the UC Berkeley student newspaper, The Daily Californian. ‘Everything Dead & Dying #1’ is tantalizing, fresh take on zombie apocalypse - Allison Kuan for The Daily Californian:
"The zombie apocalypse is a genre that often feels like beating an (un)dead horse, but “Everything Dead & Dying” provides a world full of fresh meat for readers to chew on."
And another is from Eisner-winning publication The Beat:
"Everything Dead and Dying is without question a horror story, one that as the above cover implies features illness and the undead, but moreover, writer Tate Brombal has scripted a story that deals in universally-relatable terrors, in things like imagining your loved ones suffering and also in occupying a prison of denial… The other central quality that seems likely to reel in most readers is, of course, the artwork of Jacob Phillips, who is quietly establishing himself as the go-to creator for far-flung stories of rural America. Phillips has honed his visualizations of this setting (which is, presumably, a bit unfamiliar to him, as he’s British) for years now, dating back to his star turn on That Texas Blood. And it shows in this book. Everything from the scenes out in the field to the farmhouse interiors are really spot-on. And colorist Pip Martin enhances it all the further, doing the tricky work of oscillating between Americana and gritty, bloody horror viscera. And, of course, Aditya Bidikar remains arguably the best letterer working today…
…Overall, Everything Dead and Dying #1 gets a very strong recommendation from me, ranking as it does in the upper tier of new #1 debut issues I’ve read this year. Don’t miss it." via The Beat
Love, family, and undead cows: Tate Brombal and Jacob Phillips discuss ‘Everything Dead & Dying’ The undead western love story debuts in September. - Chris Coplan for AIPT
From the AIPT interview:
AIPT: Everything Dead & Dying is being released via Image, which in Tate’s own words has “revitalized zombie stories for an entire generation.” What’s your fave or most inspiring zombie book from Image and why? Or maybe just a zombie story that filtered into this book?
Tate Brombal: I mean, like most comics fans my age, I grew up reading The Walking Dead, so I have to say that. It was around the same time that I first read World War Z, and that also blew my mind. This book definitely rests on the shoulders of so many incredible stories before it. I mean, [George] Romero goes without saying, but the zombie metaphor is a powerful one when wielded tactfully.
Jacob Phillips: Interestingly (to me at least), I have actually been looking a lot at another of Robert Kirkman’s Image books, Outcast. I love that book anyway but there’s something about the way Paul Azaceta draws it that I have found to be something I have kept going back to throughout this project. But generally I try not to pull too much from books in the same space. I’ve been looking a lot at Tommy Lee Edwards work on Grendel, Kentucky and Mazzucchelli’s work on Daredevil. Although having said that I’ve also been poring over Phantom Road, the Image book by Jeff Lemire and Gabriel E. Walta.
Our stealth cover for issue #1 is by living legend Charlie Adlard. Image had a chance to pitch the funniest article, and they did it:
Comics Legend Charlie Adlard Returns to the World of Zombies in This ‘Everything Dead & Dying’ Cover - James Whitbrook for GIZMODO
From Gizmodo: “I remember getting Charlie to do a sketch of me as a zombie, just like everybody else, around 20 years ago at a convention,” Phillips added. “So it felt only right we got Charlie ‘King of the Undead’ Adlard to do a cover for this book. And I think we can agree, he KILLED it.”
"Everything Dead & Dying is a comic book masterpiece in every conceivable way. Heartfelt and horrifying in equal measure. This is a team operating at the peak of their abilities, delivering something so unique and genuine it could only have come from the brilliant minds of writer Tate Brombal and artist Jacob Phillips -- whose work is bolstered by the excellent craftsmanship of colorist Pip Martin and letterer Aditya Bidikar. The last page will have you crying out in anguish and leave you wanting more."

"A story about one man’s refusal to admit the world has ended. I found this slice of unlife to be disturbing and haunting, which is exactly as it should be."
- Kieron Gillen
You can read a preview of the first issue on Fangoria:
“Zombies are one of the most explored corners of the horror genre. From George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead to more recent hits like Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, and even the very successful Resident Evil video game series, it’s a sub-genre that’s been explored in just about every way you can imagine. Or perhaps not! The folks at Tiny Onion and Image Comics have something very unique coming our way this fall in the form of Everything Dead & Dying and we’ve got an exclusive glimpse at what’s to come.” - Ryan Scott for Fangoria

Hi Jazzlyn,
Just wondering if we get double signatures at the Hall of Justice in Denver if we are Team Onion members? I noticed they say 4 only and 1 being Exquisite Corpses of course. Thanks for this tour that has taken me out of my comfort zone and after Denver, it will have taken me to 3 different states with awesome comic book shops along the way and even better employees and fans. Keep scaring us James and thanks because being out of work is always more satisfying if you can follow your fave comic book horror author while recovering from surgery!
I just noticed The Colorado Festival of Horror on Sept. 12-14. Will The Empire of the Tiny Onion be showcased their?
