Hola lil’ Onions,
Do I have some exciting news for you today!
Exquisite Corpses’ assassin TCG aims for the sweet spot between Magic: The Gathering and Ultimate Werewolf
The Rumors – and James-led leaks – are true! We are officially making a card game with Michael Walsh, Exquisite Corpses: The Game!
“Gameplay has been right at the center of the development of this project from my first conversation with Walsh,” Tynion told Polygon via email. “At the heart of the story concept is a brutal, bloody game that these wealthy families play, pitting these dangerous killers against each other. We knew that we wanted to give our readers a way to play along, and thankfully Michael’s experience and affinity for the tabletop game world meant that his brain was cooking from go on how to build this. We didn’t have to go out and hunt down a team to help us design this game — we built it together, right alongside the comic book.”
“Exquisite Corpses: The Game is an easy-to-learn social strategy card game,” Walsh told Polygon via email. “You get to play as your favorite killer, make alliances… and then break them, as you rack up your kill count using the unique skills of your chosen killer. I wanted readers to experience the story of Exquisite Corpses in a brand new way, where they decide who lives, who dies, and who wins.”
That’s not all! Polygon broke the news that you can start collecting the Killer Cards as soon as May 21st! For weeks now, we’ve been teasing why the polybagged variant (Cover C) has been a touch more expensive – it’s because every polybagged variant comes with a special cover and a Killer Card. Each issue will feature a new Killer Card.
"Each issue of Exquisite Corpses will offer a polybag variant, which contains both a special variant cover and a unique playing card featuring a new killer. If fans collect all 13 polybag variants, they will have assembled the full roster of killers from Season 1 of the comic series, and will be able to play an early version of the game."
So we’re making a game! And it’s FUN. Michael has done an incredible job of making the holy grail of games – compact, quick, and fun to play with 2-12 players. We can’t wait to start playing it with y’all at cons!
“It’s a Big Swing”: Tiny Onion’s Director of Marketing Jazzlyn Stone on Bringing Exquisite Corpses to Life — and Market
On the final stop of Exquisite Corpses Week at SKTCHD, I had the pleasure of speaking with David Harper about the ins and outs of marketing an event comic like Exquisite Corpses. David also works in marketing, so we get into the minutiae of marketing / I attempt to answer the question “When should a creator start thinking about marketing?”
The Director of Communications at Tiny Onion and her crack marketing team worked with the marketing team at Image Comics to make this budding franchise feel as big as it is and could be, with a carefully crafted roll out designed to maximize awareness in and the impact of Exquisite Corpses. There’s a signing tour! Character and cover reveals! Cosplay guides! More! Stone’s doing what she can to ensure this comic hits and hits big, which is essential work in a market as competitive and noisy as this one.
