Halt & Catch Fire is so sick, especially after season one. Season one is good but I think the network tried to bend it slightly in the direction of "the new Mad Men" and after that it got to have it's own identity.
Also, I had no idea Cantwell wrote comics so I started buying his Doctor Doom years ago (and I hate buying Marvel stuff brand new) because I thought a Doc Doom book by the H&CF guy sounded bizarre as hell. Solid book.
I can't recommend it as a fun tropical island with beautiful beaches and water (it is rarely any of those) but I would like to recommend Galveston to you anyways. On a historical level and horror level, I get the feeling you'd really find a lot interesting to at least research in Galveston.
The 1900 hurricane is still the deadliest natural disaster in US history. There are tons of ghosts and haunted sites. Starting during the 1920's, Galveston was largely mob-run (jokingly called The Free State of Galveston because of how openly they flaunted prohibition, gambling, and brothel laws). Before the hurricane, it was more or less the city in Texas. It was the port of entry for German immigrants in the South. It's where Juneteenth comes from.
And now it's a kind of shitty beach with some kind of shitty water, an hour drive along kind of shitty highways from Houston.
